About us

We are three volunteers, Vimalo from Germany, Eugenija from Lithuania and Lucia from Italy. Together we have been working in Teachers Training College in rural Mozambique and together we have decided to give something to the community where we lived and worked.

About the school

The conditions in which we found the original school building were unacceptable – there were supposed to be 300 children each day in this “School”, which consisted of few wooden pillars and was covered with zinc boards. No walls, no floor, no windows, no desks or chairs, no books and school materials.

About the community

Nhakhande community is situated in administrative centre of Chiúta district, in Tete province in central Mozambique. It is a very poor area, where people survive by maintaining small gardens (machamba) and keeping some goats. There is no industry in the area, except for some small mills grinding corn for the population. The comercial life of the area consists of two rather small markets where people sell what they can grow in their gardens. There is no energy in the village and no telephone connection and water can be collected only from the pumps or wells. In year 2004 only 56% of children living in the district went to school and the reasons for that are various, including lack of schools and teachers.
